Silica aerogel have been the most widely investigated type of inorganic aerogels primarily due to their superior thermal insulation properties. Aerogels belong to the class of mesoporous materials that are synthesized through the conventional sol–gel method and have properties like very low density, narrow pore size distribution, low thermal conductivity, high surface area, and transparency. The physico-chemical properties of these aerogels depend on a wide variety of factors such as the chemical nature of the precursor, the reactant concentrations, reaction conditions and the drying technique. Various forms of Silica Aerogel Insulation Felt such as monoliths, granules, or powders have been used for thermal insulation purposes.
Silica Aerogel Insulation also have favorable properties that make them suitable for use as acoustic insulators, adsorbents, catalysts, or storage media .
