Heavy wall forged pipe INTRODUCTION : 

Producing heavywall members by conventional processes requires highly sophisticated technology for forming pipe and making nodes, thus presenting both technical and economic problems. The new process solves these problems for the most part. 

A comparison of new heavywall forged seamless steel pipe with its counterparts show that the new pipe has the following advantages: 

Heavywall seamless pipe without weld seams. A can measuring 84 inches in 00, 4 inches in WT and 20 feet in length, when conventionally produced, has one or two axial weld seams and one circumferential weld seam. This is inevitable because there are limit both to the capacity of pipe forming machinery and to the size of steel plates produced. Therefore, it is almost impossible to install stubs, which are concentrated on node cans, without some of them coming into contact with the weld seams of the pipe. Manufacturing nodes from forged pipe is extremely easy because it does not have any weld seams.

Excellent lamellar tearing resistance. Heavywall pipe made from a hollow steel ingot has little segregation, a metallurgical feature that makes the new forged pipe far cleaner than pipe made from a conventional ingot. Besides, the new production process has solved problems associated with pipe made from rolled plate -- low impact characteristics of the welded zone and the directionality of properties.

High economy. Use of hollow steel ingots directly results in greater improvements in product yield than conventional forging processes which involve piercing through a solid ingot. Moreover, the production process is simplified, leading to lower production costs. Nodes can also be produced by casting. However, since individual nodes have different configurations, the casting process is not economical. In addition, the characteristics of cast structures are far inferior to those of forged structures.
